Our team explored the full range of carbon removal options in preparation for the Student Awards portion of the XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition, eventually focusing on biomass carbon removal through a precombustion carbon capture process. We have continued to study the process starting from gasification of biomass, the water gas shift reaction to maximize hydrogen and carbon dioxide production, and the subsequent separation of carbon dioxide. Our focus is now on the water gas shift and carbon capture steps. Technologies for these steps have been developed and applied at a large scale in natural gas or coal-based plants, but we see a need for a dedicated purpose option for carbon removal at the scale biomass or biogenic waste-based plants operate at.
