Dr. Mark Symes
Dr. Mark Symes Program Director, Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA)

I am a Programme Director at the UK's Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA), leading the Exploring Climate Cooling programme. This programme is building a robust evidence base to explore – with independent oversight – if climate cooling approaches could ever be feasible, scalable, safe, and governable.

We cannot govern what we don't understand.

I am also the Professor of Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Technology in the School of Chemistry at the University of Glasgow. At the University, my main research interests are in developing new electrochemical processes and electrochemical technology for the more sustainable production of fuels and key chemical feedstocks.

I am a founder and chief scientific officer at Clyde Hydrogen Systems, a spin-out from my research lab that is developing a new generation of decoupled electrolyzers for converting renewable electricity into green hydrogen. I am also the founder and Director of the Glasgow Hydrogen Innovation Centre, which provides incubator space for start-ups in the hydrogen space to design and build first prototype devices.
