THE GRAND CHALLENGE

We need carbon removal to keep global temperature increases below 2ºC and prevent irreversible climate catastrophe. The world does not have enough installed carbon removal capacity to meet the growing demand from companies, governments, and individuals that have pledged to reach net zero or negative.

Every IPCC 1.5ºC scenario now requires carbon removal at scale. XPRIZE Carbon Removal will accelerate solutions that collectively achieve 10 gigatons of permanent carbon dioxide removal by 2050. Each team will demonstrate carbon removal from air, oceans, land, and rocks using any method. XPRIZE will validate solutions and judges will select winners based on demonstrated performance and scalability. In parallel, XPRIZE will implement impact initiatives that engage the policy, investment, and business communities to deploy solutions at scale.

$100M will incentivize technological advancements in rapid carbon removal across the full spectrum of solutions.

HOW TO WIN

The winning teams will demonstrate the most scalable CO2 removal solution at minimum scale of 1 ton per day. Every solution will have strengths and limitations; there is no singular solution. Independent judges will evaluate team performance according to five key criteria, which may be weighted differently according to track.
